11 Questions to Ask When Choosing a CCRC

When considering a CCRC for yourself or a loved one, it’s crucial to ask the right questions to ensure the community is the best fit for your needs. Here are some important questions to consider:

  1. What services are available at the community? Which are included and which cost extra? Find out the range of services provided, from healthcare and dining to housekeeping and transportation. Be sure to ask about any additional costs for specific services.

  2. What kind of contracts are available, ranging from the most extensive services to lesser services? CCRCs typically offer various contract options to accommodate different levels of care and financial requirements. Inquire about each type and the services they cover.

  3. What are the fees for each type of contract? Understand the costs associated with different contract options, including entrance fees, monthly fees, and any additional expenses.

  4. Can I review inspection reports for the CCRC? Request any available inspection reports to ensure the community meets all regulatory requirements and maintains a high standard of care.

  5. Is any part of the entry fee refundable when you move or pass away? Some CCRCs offer refundable entrance fees, which can be returned to the resident or their estate under specific conditions. Ask about the refund policy and the percentage of the fee that may be refundable.

  6. Can I bring my pet with me to live in a CCRC? Inquire about the community’s pet policy, as rules and restrictions may vary. Some CCRCs are pet-friendly, while others may have limitations on the size, breed, or number of pets allowed per resident.

  7. Who lives in the community, and what activities are offered? Get a sense of the average age of residents and the types of programs and activities available to ensure a good fit for your lifestyle and interests.

  8. What is the occupancy rate? A high occupancy rate is a good indicator of the community’s overall satisfaction and financial stability. Look for an occupancy rate of 85% or higher unless it’s a new development.

  9. Is the CCRC financially sound? Request to review the CCRC’s financial records, checking for any unusual indicators such as a large amount of debt, failure to meet bond obligations, or evidence of liabilities exceeding assets.

  10. What if my spouse or partner needs a different level of care? One of the benefits of CCRCs for couples is the ability to continue living in the same community even if their care needs differ. Ask about available options for couples with differing care requirements.

  11. Which agency regulates the CCRC, and is it in good standing? Find out which agency oversees the CCRC in your state and check its standing with the regulator to ensure compliance and quality standards.

By addressing these questions, you’ll gain a comprehensive understanding of the CCRC and its offerings, helping you make an informed decision about whether it’s the right choice for you or your loved one.
